William Hunt Diederich was an artist who worked constantly and in a great variety of media, a release for his prodigious creative energy. Aside from his more traditional three-dimensional sculpture which was cast in bronze, Diederich also produced a large number of brilliantly designed metalwork objects. For these he employed a technique similar to the one he used to make cut paper silhouettes, another medium in which he was expert. His metalwork was in great demand in the prosperous 1920s, mainly for use in private houses. Architectural elements such as stair railings or large window designs were commissioned for specific sites, but Diederich's lighting fixtures, trivets, weathervanes, and fire-screens were sold through decorators and art galleries.
